This is an ongoing project, first initiated by the MLA Committee on Information Technology (CIT) in 2009 as a way for the academic community to develop, gather, and share materials about the evaluation of work in digital media and digital humanities, for purposes of tenure and promotion. It builds on materials initially written and hosted by former CIT member Geoffrey Rockwell (ca. 2005-2008), and was later housed as a stand-alone wiki by the MLA. It is being ported to the MLA Commons (here) in 2014.

The MLA Guidelines for Evaluating Work in Digital Humanities and Digital Media were revised in January 2012 and approved by the MLA Executive Council in February 2012.

In January 2012 the CIT also sponsored a Pre-Conference Workshop on Evaluating Digital Work. The workshop archives are available here.

In January 2014 the CIT sponsored an interactive Convention session entitled Evaluating Digital Scholarship: Candidate Success Stories. This blog was launched on MLA Commons to continue to build the conversation around these evaluation questions within the wider MLA community.

In January 2015 the MLA Office of Scholarly Communication session entitled A New Kind of Work: Articulating and Evaluating Excellence in Digital Scholarship discusses the question from the perspective of campus leaders at a variety of institutions.
